Nine films. Different families. Conflicting histories. Follow the people, stories, and sources through every released chapter.
A practical reading path through interviews, institutional catalogs, critical writing, and edition documentation.
Begin with a film, then a department
Use a film dossier to establish the installment and continuity. Follow its cast and crew page to a person, then read interviews alongside the relevant production, sound, or release chapter. A cinematographer’s account and an actor’s recollection can describe the same shoot from different working conditions.
Know what each link can establish
An institutional catalog supports credits and release history. An interview records what a participant said. A review is a critic’s assessment. A distributor’s edition page documents the supplements it advertises. Those sources are complementary, but one should not be made to stand in for another.
Keep uncertainty visible
This archive uses original summaries and links to the publishers. A research record is not a claim to have watched a disc-only supplement or accessed an entire book. Less-documented people may have credit records without a dedicated interview. Such gaps are identified instead of filled with invented biography.
AFI’s film record provides credits, release documentation, a synopsis, and references to contemporary trade coverage. Its notes distinguish the original two-word “Chain Saw” title.
The Texas State Historical Association places the original film in its regional production and cultural context. A useful historical overview to compare with participant accounts.
Austin InSight revisits the film’s fiftieth anniversary through its Texas filmmaking context. The PBS page provides the program and a transcript where available.
Korey Pereira’s sound-focused interview with Bell covers the work behind the original film’s unsettling audio. A particularly useful craft source beyond general cast recollections.
Daily Dead reproduces Scream Factory’s special-feature announcement, including the director’s-cut commentary and new participant interviews. It distinguishes the release’s different versions.
