The third film returns to a travel story: Michelle and Ryan are drawn away from the apparent safety of the road and into a landscape controlled by the family. A roadside encounter introduces Tex, while Alfredo and the household extend the threat beyond Leatherface himself.
Benny changes the balance of the pursuit. His survival skills offer resistance, creating a different dynamic from a group that is almost entirely unprepared. Michelle remains central to the experience of trying to escape the family’s territory.
An archive reading: the film’s title promotes Leatherface as a recognizable series identity. That emphasis is important when comparing it with the first film’s ensemble nightmare and the second film’s competing Stretch-and-Lefty storylines. Alternate material and release versions also complicate discussions of its conclusion.
