Sally and Franklin Hardesty travel with Jerry, Kirk, and Pam after reports of grave desecration. The trip connects a cemetery, an old family property, a roadside business, and the house where Leatherface’s family lives. These ordinary destinations gradually become a trap: seeking fuel, shelter, or assistance repeatedly brings the travelers closer to danger.
The film’s structure narrows from a group journey to Sally’s ordeal. Its last movement exchanges wandering daylight scenes for pursuit and captivity, then returns to open air without offering a reassuring explanation. The family’s dinner turns domestic ritual into a performance of power.
An archive reading: the film’s force comes partly from the mismatch between what the camera shows and what the soundtrack encourages viewers to imagine. It is not a documentary of a historical Texas massacre. True-crime influences and the opening’s documentary language should be distinguished from the fictional events on screen.
